Ingredients

2 cubes butter (room temperature)

1 ½ cups sugar

4 ½ cups flour

2 ½ tsp baking powder

3 tsp anise seed

1 cup nuts (walnuts or pine nuts, cut into small pieces)

6 eggs

2 tsp. vanilla

Directions

Cream butter and sugar well. Add the beaten eggs and vanilla and beat well with electric beater.

Mix flour, baking powder, anise seed and nuts well and add to butter, egg and sugar mixture.

Combine well with your hands. If the dough seems a little soft, you can add a little flour until it is easy to handle. Roll on to a floured board.

Grease 2 cookie sheets lightly and form the dough into 6 loaves as long as the cookie (2 inches wide and ¾ inch thick). Place 3 loaves on each sheet and brush top with a beaten egg.

Bake the loaves in an oven at 350 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Remove carefully from cookie sheet and with a sharp knife cut diagonally. Place cut down on cookie sheet and bake for 10 or 15 minutes.
