Chocolate Picnic Cake

This was Grandma Marie’s favorite birthday cake.
It travels well and can be cut up into small pieces like brownies.
 
 

Ingredients

Batter 

2 cups sugar

2 cups flour

1 cup water

2 sticks butter

4 Tbsp cocoa

½ cup buttermilk

2 eggs

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp vanilla

Frosting

6 Tbsp milk

4 Tbsp cocoa

1 stick butter

1 box powdered sugar

1 tsp vanilla

1 cup walnuts, chopped (optional)

Directions

Combine sugar and flour in a bowl and set aside.

Combine water, butter and cocoa in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Pour this over the flour mixture and blend with a mixer.

Add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda and vanilla to mixture. Mix well and pour into a greased jelly roll pan. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Cool for 15 minutes and frost.

For frosting, combine milk, cocoa and butter in saucepan and bring to a boil.

Add powdered sugar, vanilla and walnuts, if used to hot frosting mixture.
